The Neighbourhood House relies on the involvement of community members in reaching out and helping their neighbours.  Volunteering is one way that individuals can help out and become involved in building a healthy community. The following lists some areas where volunteers can help out.

PROCEDURE FOR BECOMING A VOLUNTEER

 

Interested volunteers at SBNH to be in contact with Volunteer Coordinator and find out about the available volunteer positions, the job description for each position and any information which is related to their volunteering at SBNH.

 

Request and Recruitment for Volunteers

Requests for volunteers and recruitment shall be submitted by completing and signing the Volunteer Application Form of SBNH.  For youth volunteers, their parents/guardians signature will also be required in the Application Form.  Volunteers are recruited without regard to gender, handicap, age, race, sexual orientation or any other condition.

 

Interviewing

 Prior to being assigned or appointed to a position,

all volunteers shall be interviewed to find out their

suitability and interest  for the position.  The

interview will be relaxed and informal and will

determine the needs and reason why they

are volunteering as well as qualifications of the volunteer, their commitment to fulfill the requirements of the position, and to answer any questions that the volunteer might have about the position.   The timing of the interview will be fixed in consultation with the applicant.

 

Placement

In placing a volunteer, attention will be paid to the interests and capabilities of the volunteer and to the requirements of both the volunteer and the supervisor/s.

 


Acceptance and Appointment

All volunteers will receive a verbal notice of acceptance

or appointment to a volunteer position.  An authorized

representative of SBNH will give notice of acceptance

to volunteers.  This task is normally delegated to the

Volunteer Coordinator.   At the time of final acceptance, each volunteer will complete a Letter of Agreement and will receive a copy of their job description.

 

Timesheets

Individual volunteers are responsible for

the accurate completion and timely submission

of timesheets, where applicable.

 

Re-assignment

Volunteers who are re-assigned to a new position will be interviewed for that position and receive all appropriate orientation and training for that position before they begin work.  In addition, any screening procedures appropriate for the specific position will be completed, even if the volunteer had already begun work with SBNH.

 

Orientation

All volunteers must receive a general orientation on SBNH and the activity for which they have been recruited and a specific orientation on the purposes and requirements of the position they applied.

 

Training and Support

Volunteers will receive on the job training to help them have the necessary information and skills required for the job.  The timing and type of training will be flexible according to each job.  Volunteers will be in contact with an assigned staff who will be responsible for direct support of that volunteer.  The staff will be available for consultation and assistance for the volunteer.  Support will be provided on meeting volunteer expectations, time and resources.  

 

Feedback

Volunteers will receive periodic feedback to review their work.  The feedback session is an opportunity both for volunteers and the staff of SBNH to jointly discuss the performance, suggest any changes in the work style, seek suggestions, convey appreciation, and find out alternate process which might help volunteer’s and SBNH’s improvement.

 

Evaluation

As part of the development strategy of SBNH, upon

completion of assignment, volunteers will receive

necessary documents for self evaluation and

evaluation by supervisor. 

 

Recognition

An annual volunteer recognition event will beconducted to highlight and reward the contribution of volunteers to  SBNH.  Volunteers will be consulted and involved in order to develop an appropriate format for this event.

All staff is encouraged to undertake ongoing methods of recognition of volunteer’s service on a regular basis.  These methods of informal recognition range from appreciation, consultation, and seeking participation of volunteers in decision-making, providing increased responsibility, interest in needs and ideas, etc.

 

 Letter of Reference

Letters of reference may beprovided to volunteer uponcompletion of the assignedwork or at least 20 hours ofaccumulated services.
