A Neighbourhood House is a volunteer driven community based social service agency that provides programs and services in response to identified community needs. It is a place in the community that provides a warm and welcoming environment for people young and old from diverse backgrounds. Neighbourhood Houses are worldwide and have been in the Lower Mainland for over 100 years. Neighbourhood Houses are very popular in Vancouver where ten well-established houses are meeting the needs of their communities.

The South Burnaby Neighbourhood House is the first Neighbourhood House to be established in Burnaby.

Our mission is to make our neighbourhood a better place to live.

Our goal is to enable people to enhance their lives and strengthen their community.

Our challenge is to work with our community to develop innovative programs and services that meet the changing needs of a diverse population.

The South Burnaby Neighbourhood is still relatively new. The Society was established in 1996 and in 1999 we opened our storefront location on Jubilee Avenue. In 2002, the storefront expanded to include a community room and a reception area. In addition to our home space we also have space which houses two portables on the Marlborough school site. The South Burnaby Neighbourhood House has an active Board with several working committees such as Strategic Planning Committee, a Personnel Committee, Finance committee and a Fundraising Committee. We currently employ an executive director, program director, office coordinator, a part-time volunteer coordinator, 3 permanent childcare supervisors, 15 part-time staff and several other staff who are employed on a temporary, seasonal basis. In addition we have an active volunteer base. In addition to user fees and community donations, funding continues to come from a variety of sources, both governmental and non-governmental and includes the following: Gaming proceeds from Bingo Country at Middlegate Mall. Alexandra Foundation, Vancouver Foundation Corporations: VanCity, Royal Bank, CKNW Ministry for Children and Families United Way of Lower Mainland project funding Ministry of Community, Aboriginal and Women’s Services Burnaby Metrotown Rotary Club Burnaby Firefighters.
