Information and Referral

Community information (ie. pamphlets, brochures, resources) is accessible and staff and volunteers are available to answer questions when neighbours drop by or phone.

Maywood Community Festival

A Community day organized by local organizations and residents that involves a Maywood / Metrotown Community Clean-Up in addition to a day of festive acitivies and events for people of all ages.

Youth Leadership

VanCity funding continues to support the ongoing development of a Youth Leadership program.Leadship is a program for high school students which gives participants an opporutnity to learn leadership skills, such as problem solving,group dynamics and risk management and then puts these new skills into practice by having invididuals volunteer in programs with children and community projects. There are currently three levels of Leadership training offered at the Neighbourhood House.

Summer Day Camp

We operate four daycamp programs for children 6 to 12 yrs. in partnership with local schools. Current sites include Maywood, Stride, Edmonds, and Marlborough. Weekly sessions are offered during July and August, Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm. Phone in early June for more information. .

Community Dinners and Summer Barbeques

Neighbourhood House staff and volutneers host a minimum of four community dinners and 4 summer barbeques each year which welcome neighbours, families, and friends, and provides low-cost meals and eveenings of entertainment. These events continue to be an important focus for our community as they encourage a sharing of cultures and promote the Neighbourhood House as a welcoming place in the community.

E.S.L. Classes

English Classes are offered in partnership with Maywood School and the Burnaby School District. Childminding is provided by the Neighbourhood House. Registration occurs at Maywood School. For information call 664-8207.

ELSA level 3 class is provided by Burnaby College at the Neighbourhood House. Classes take place Monday to Friday 9 am to 12 noon.

English Conversation classes are provided by volunteer facilitators. Classes usually take place two times a week and start dates vary depending on the time of year. Cost for these classes is $7 which helps to cover the cost of materials and supplies.

School Aged Childcare

Licensed childcare is provided at currently offered at three different locations. This service provides working families with a safe place and quality program for their children. These programs are fee for service with government subsidies available for those who qualify. Chilcare offered on school sites: Marlborough Neighbourhood Care Maywood Neighbourhood Care Stride Neighbourhood Care.

Student Training

On the Job training experience for students A variety of opportunities are availabe for students who want to gain work experience. This includes placements for student who are attending college and university as well as general volunteer opportunities. During the summer, we provide employment for approximately 15 to 20 secondary and post-secondary students in our Day Camp program. We are committed to providing opportunities for youth and adults to expand their skills and work experiences.

Empty Bowls Project

We are partners in Burnaby's Empty Bowls Project. This is an event sponsored by the Burnaby Food First committee and held every second year. It involves several community agencies, artists,and restaurants and raises funds for hungry children and families in Burnaby. A gala event is hosted at Shadbolt art centre where attendees receive a handmade bowl and sample a variety of foods from differenct restaurants.

Homework Haven

Homework Haven is a program offered at Stride School for children is grades 2 to 5 who experience barriers to acedemic success. The program is funded by the Royal Bank of Canada and is offered to children aterschool twice weekly.

Income Tax Clinics

Volunteers are recruited to assist low invome earners to complete their income tax returns. Appointments are scheduled and booked from March to April. A $5 donation is requested for this service.

Legal Advice Clinic

Free Legal Advice clinics are offered to low income earners in partnership with the Western Canada Access to Justice Society. Appointments are scheduled with Volutneer Lawyers every Tuesday afternoon. This service is only available to individuals who can not access Legal Aid.
